The tradition of savory, flavorful charcuterie in Spain dates all the way back to antiquity, when invading Romans brought salting and curing techniques of meat preservation to the Iberian peninsula. In the centuries since, charcuterie (especially pork-based charcuterie) has become an utterly integral part of the Spanish culinary landscape, which now hosts countless specialized styles of jamón and sausage. Trader Joe’s Spanish Inspired Charcutería contains a selection of three such variations, each thinly-sliced and ready to serve: serrano ham (a salt-cured, prosciutto-like ham), uncured salchichon (a rich, savory-seasoned, salami-like summer sausage), and uncured chorizo (a peppery, garlicky, and smoky pork sausage).
All three can be enjoyed as part of a tapas spread or hors d’oeuvres platter, and all three pair wonderfully well with a bold, fruit-forward red wine—we’re particularly partial to a glass of Satis Dei Syrah Garnacha, ourselves. Any or all members of the trio make a superb addition to a sandwich (try mixing and matching to your preference of smoky/salty/spicy). And we’d be remiss if we failed to mention that they also taste great simply snacked upon on their own, right out of the package.
