Though quite similar in appearance and taste, steelhead trout and Atlantic salmon actually belong to two totally different genera of fish. And while they tend to be used interchangeably at the dinner table, there are some key differences that go beyond the taxonomical: steelhead trout tends to be leaner, less oily, and milder in flavor, making it a popular choice for those who like their fish to be less “fishy.” We find that steelhead’s more overall delicate profile makes it an apt candidate for serving smoked, which is precisely why we’ve brought Trader Joe’s Smoked Steelhead Trout to our refrigerators.
It’s brought to us by a sustainable fish supplier in Norway, who smokes this firm, yet silky and tender Steelhead Trout in facilities within just a few miles of their fisheries. They then slice it into a thicker cut—reminiscent of sashimi—to accentuate its toothsome texture and subtle smoky notes on the palate. It can be used in any situation that calls for smoked salmon, and particularly excels in applications that let its gentler flavors shine, like over a slice of avocado toast, atop a leafy green salad, or, of course, a crisp and chewy bagel with Whipped Cream Cheese and Capers.
